Who can participate?
All MVHRA members and non-members associated with the chapter.

What is it all about?
Workforce readiness is the collaboration of business, education and the community in preparation of a qualified workforce through schools, vocational/technical colleges, adult education, and continuing professional development.

Where do I go to help?
You will be matched to volunteer with a school or community-based organization in close proximity to your home or work, or in a location you have designated.

When will I be called?
You will be contacted when a request from a school or community-based organization is in your expressed area of interest/expertise. You will have the opportunity to accept or decline the request based upon your availability at that time.

Why should I volunteer my time?
Forming partnerships with education and community-based organizations could create bottom-line savings for the HR professional in terms of lower recruitment costs, turnover costs, and training costs. Additionally, sharing your time and expertise will help shape the futures of others in your community.

Junior Achievement Success Skills®

JA Success Skills meets the needs of a diverse group of high school students by providing engaging, academically enriching, and experiential learning sessions in work-readiness education and career perspectives.

JA Success Skills is a 7 session course for students in grades 9-12. Instructional materials are packaged and include detailed activity plans for the volunteer, workbooks for students, and consumable materials to be used in the classroom

Session 1: It’s My Life – Students learn that a career is not only work that provides income, but is also important to the worker for reasons that meet his or her values, interests, and abilities. Working in groups students evaluate sample resumes to determine which job candidate they would hire.
Session 2: Listen Up – Working with partners, students participate in a role-playing activity designed to develop effective speaking and listening skills. Using verbal and non-verbal cues, they learn how to build rapport with others.
Session 3: Stay Connected – By analyzing case studies and completing a puzzle activity, students recognize the need for teamwork and cooperation in the workplace.
Session 4: Think Win/Win – Working in teams, students develop solutions to potential workplace conflicts. They consider win/win, win/lose, and lose/lose responses to conflict.
Session 5: Work Smart – Working in groups, students participate in a game show in which they practice their decision-making skills by solving common workplace problems.
Session 6: The Marketing Spin – Working in groups, students practice the Success Skill Reflect and Evaluate. They identify the connection between advertising a product and promoting themselves.
Session 7: It’s My Future – Students participate in mock employment interviews. They review the 16 Success Skills presented throughout the course of the program.

Career Talks
Visit students in the classroom or new/returning entrants to the workforce to explain the work in your industry, company, or job and help them think about their interest/abilities in relation to potential careers.

Job Shadowing
Offer students or new/returning entrants to the workforce an up-close look at the world of work, providing them with the ability to spend time during the work day with an employee of a certain trade, craft or profession.

Speaking Engagements
Discuss the need for workforce readiness efforts through speaking engagements at businesses, schools, and parent groups.
