The Society for
Human Resource Management (SHRM) is the world’s largest association devoted to
human resource management. Representing more than 170,000 individual members,
the Society serves the needs of HR professionals by providing the most essential
and comprehensive set of resources available. As an influential voice, SHRM is
committed to advancing the human resource profession to ensure that HR is an essential
and effective partner in developing and executing organizational strategy. Founded
in 1948, SHRM currently has more than 500 affiliated chapters within the United
States and members in more than 120 countries.
Membership Categories:
Professional Member - individuals engaged in human resource management
with at least three years of experience at the exempt level; or any individual
certified by the Human Resource Certification Institute; or any faculty member
with three or more years experience holding at least assistant professorial rank
in HR; or full-time consultants with at least three years experience as an HR
practitioner; or full-time attorneys with at least three years experience in counseling
and advising clients on matters relating to the HR profession. Professional members
have voting rights and may hold office in the Society.
General Member - individuals engaged in human resource management at
the exempt level but do not meet the requirements for Professional member. General
members have voting rights but may not hold office in the Society.
Associate Member - Individuals in non-exempt HRM positions as well
as those who do not meet any of the foregoing categories but have a bona fide
interest in human resource management. Associate members do not have voting rights
and may not hold office in the Society.
Benefits of Membership:
Members receive two award-winning publications monthly, HR Magazine and HR News.
The SHRM Information Center assists members with questions on over 100 human
resource topics (a SHRM membership number is required).
TeleSHRM helps members network with other members by providing other member
names and phone numbers based on industry type, title, location, function, company
name, or company size.
The SHRM website provides members with daily
updates on regulations, legislation, court decisions, and more. Members may also
access the Information Center, talk to each other on-line via bulletin board postings,
access nationwide Human Resource job opportunities and much more.
SHRM's professional development support includes information on conferences,
seminars, professional certification through the Human Resource Certification
Institute (HRCI) and the largest annual conference devoted to the human resource
profession, hosted by SHRM.
Legislative affairs in which the SHRM government affairs staff monitors congressional
actions that affect human resource management and communicates to congress the
Societys position on pending legislation. Members have the opportunity to
get involved in grassroots legislative efforts and also have access to a 24-hour
legislative hotline and SHRM's Government
Affairs page.
